today i spent the day with agent sakur9 at sea world.

i was originally plannng to stay in SD from tony's party, but gina's party came up and alot of other last minute family crap.

I haven't been to sea world since I was 8 and my only memory of it besides shamu was being shat on by a bunch of sea gulls and sitting on my dad's shoulders.

I've been to san diego many times,but never had the opportunity to go on in there. Driving on the outside, I had this idea that the place was huge and was something to the size of the aquarium them park in JAWS 3.

I was hoping the shark encounter exhibit was huge and sported a few makos or something.

My experience of sea world was a bit lack luster purely because of size. ben and i finished roamng around in a few hours. and really i love staring at fishies.

The cost for the inteactive experieince with the dolphins and whales ws like $170 a person. Not quite what i'm ready to spend on myself yet, maybe next year if there's a bonus in the equation.

I'm thinking of doing video journals Starting on the first of January. and doing one everyday of 2010 and storing them on my external hard drives... the reason why I won't do them for youtube is mostly because i don't want to edit them, i can't stand looking or hearing myself. I want to do this so that there's evidence left behind that i existed. I feel that I will eventually fade away into obscurity.

Today, after saying goodbye to my sister as she headed off to the soggy lower quadrant of the eastern US, and then going to see Sherlock Holmes (okay movie, not the best, but good; I kept staring at the bustles and dresses 'cuz that time period is so interesting clothing-wise for women), my mom pulled out the scrapbooks she's been putting together for our family. Oh man. I know nearly 100% of them aren't online, at least until the digital age and then we don't even have hard copies of most of them...sad, really. I miss having actual pictures.

A long time ago, a meme or something was floating around asking for the oldest picture of you online and I passed it by since I had nothing. I'm wondering if I should put some of them up (via photo of a photo since we don't have a scanner here). Hmm... I'll think about it.

Lots of movies have been on tv this past weekend. I've seen pieces of a good number of them, such as The Wizard of Oz earlier. I never realized that Night of Bald Mountain plays when Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion are breaking down the door to rescue Dorothy. Random factoid for you.

P.S. Umineko, why you leave me hanging!?! *dies* Also, randomly, I really want to wear Suigetsu again. They're finally Team Taka in the anime!

First off, thanks gina for hosting a wonderful night last night. your rack of lamb tasted awesome.

So on my way to gina's, my gps told me to take the 71. When i got closer i saw that it was the 71 expressway and i thought.. i'm not paying for a toll road, so i ended up on the 15 exiting lamonite or something like that.

if you ever go to gina's, do not exit here. especially at night. It's like a desolate run down agricultural area with a long stretch narrow road with not much in sight besides undeveloped flatland, run down sheet metal shacks and whatnot. At points i was waiting for leatherface to jump out with a chainsaw. Being superstitious, I really didn't want to even stop at the stop signs. totally creepy.

Good thing though that after 4 miles of driving through god knows where, I did find an air musuem. i might want to check out that place later during the daytime. but man... i was shaking in my boots until got there.

i found out later that the 71 isn't a toll road, but the little detour gave gave birth to a funny story.

~ This coming year 2009 I was planning to be (just a little) in hiatus of cosplay but I definitely can't do it. Although this can change depending on my financial situation and school.
This year my group and I, we have decided to get together with friends and make costumes that we had planned since long ago and incorporate a few new ones that came along the way. This year will be very productive and we'll come with many surprises all year long, I plan to make this year a wonderful year.
So, I'm making a list of conventions and costumes I will be attending/making during this coming year. I plan to update every time I change my mind, I can't do a costume or I cancel an event. XD

EDIT: Although this year came out with many series of unfortunate events that lead to not being able to participate in masquerades as planned, canceled conventions, canceled costumes and many other things -_- . We are moving many things to next year 2010 and hopefully things will work out better.

Well first off, all i can say was if i was ever thrown a curveball, this would be it. But then it would be my fault for assuming so. For the short amount of time that I've gotten to know tony, it's been a toss-up between photo magic and his infamous mongolian tea parties. His personality reminds me somewhat of the happy-go lucky uncle in those HK gangster movies where they're like fun and festive up front, but they're part of some gangster organization since their childhood. But I doubt tony's running drugs and a slave trade... or is he????

But anyway I was follwing my gps and came up to the house. It was a bit dark, so I was unsure if i was really at the right place and I see what seemed like a normal asian family with a kid running about. I was thinking to myself, "they can't have a mongolian tea party with a 10 year old around"

boy was i wrong. The mongolian tea party did happen.
We spent the night watching transformers and tropic thunder. I haven't watched a movie on blu ray yet and it felt like tony took me from coach to 1st class. Though i didn't care much for transformers, there were little details that I didn't notice when i watched it in the theatres.

another highlight of the night was finally meeting the mysterious andyrak. I keep on hearing his name get tossed around but now I can put a face with a name. Between him, minh, tony, and cabusi, I got to toss around my questions for my possible next camera purchase.

Though I'm really estatic about the specs of the 1d mk4, I'll probably rent the body and take it for a test drive to see if it's worth selling my kidney. A simple answer that i totally overlooked. Most likely I'll settle for the T1i because they use the same processor or the 7d if i feel fancy.

Anyway thanks tony for throwing another night to remember.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm inconsistent about which shoots I'm editing this break. But I'm just tossing these out there so you can send your ♥ to [info]fattastik and [info]akusesu. :3

Technically, 7411 is a re-edit. Both of these take advantage of a bi-color filter to emphasize the desert-ness. Which admittedly probably isn't very B*RS-y. But these shots were from sunset, so the base colors meant it was going to be a bitch to edit that way anyway. :P

What was so damn important that i hung on to life last year? what couldn't I let go? Why Did i beat the odds? I know if i were to go through it again, i wouldn't have the strength to. I'd hope i would be intelligent enough just to let go... for me, I feel like I just gave Death a Raincheck and he'll be coming to collect at anytime. At this point it feels more like "on layaway" than anything else. Death WILL come for me again. its all a matter of when. What scares me is that it could be 50 years from now or 50 seconds from now. Always lurking in the Shadows...

Somehow this makes me lol forever and ever. I showed him Hetalia a month ago on a whim and he's fallen in love with it (he's part Italian and he is very much like Italy. The spazzy one.).

Going to see this tonight with [info]vespabee. Hoping my voice comes back somewhat within the next six hours so I can interview people and not have to resort to editing! Cultural. 25 December 2009 @ 10:37 pm
After a somewhat trying Christmas Eve - I overslept and ended up getting to the airport too late for the airline to give me my ticket to board so I had to change my flights to one that left later, which ended up being late as we couldn't board until all of our flight attendants were there, but stopped in Minneapolis during the winter storm blowing through the Midwest O_O, and got me home at about the same time; well it should have if the plane out of LA hadn't been late (I took the same plane for both flights luckily or I would have had to BOOK IT to my next one) and then if we hadn't sat on the tarmack for about an hour for de-icing and a row of planes waiting to take off - I made it home to lovely drizzle and 30 degree weather.

All of the snow turned to rain as it reached us so Christmas was just very wet. Our dog, Max, was super excited to see me (my dad claims he always knows who I am when I get back... something about how he reacts when I get there). Today consisted of the yearly tradition of waking my sister and I up, opening a few presents, going to pick up my grandma from the facility she's staying in, and then meeting up with some family for Christmas dinner and our gift exchange.

My aunt, uncle, and cousin recently got the most adorable puppy.
Our first dog looked almost exactly like him and they're names only differ by spelling... oh my heartstrings )

Present haul this year was incredibly small, as forwarned by my parents, and I assumed it was because they paid for my expensive flight home and the fact that my dad's retiring in a little over a month. No biggie, I can deal. I had already gifted myself with an upgraded cell phone (free with all of the discounts that were added to it) that arrived Christmas Eve. Standard stocking stuffers, a few clothes, a bit of cash to help with bills, a dvd from my sister... and then my dad carts out two large boxes for my sister and myself and tells us to open them at the same time. Knowing I put only two large items on my list, the same ones I put on last year, 90% not expecting them to ever been gifted to me, I'm all OMG NO WAY. They gave us matching laptops. [info]spwinkles, it's exactly the same kind you have. lol (if you named yours Ahiru I'm gonna crack up) I was totally shocked. I had even started considering buying a netbook myself. My sister's moving (far) away this weekend, so I can see how a laptop would be easier to move with than a desktop, like I had to do, and my parents are all about being fair and even for Christmas.

So yeah. Typing this up on my new laptop right now. Ka-chow.

Oh and before I forget, so many of you have wished this to me through various means (LJ, Facebook, texts) so I want to send it right back at ya.

MERRY CHRISTMAS/HAPPY HANNUKAH/HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!

I spent christmas eve at my uncle's (really we're like distant cousins or something like that)house with my parents. it was actually quite nice since his he brought his gf over with her family so his mom was on her best behavior.

So for the first time in many years, christmas dinner was actually nice.

I woke up this morning though to what i thought was going to be a nice christmas for a change.

Normally it's been my tradition since 4 years ago to escape my parents and spend the holidays snowboarding since my dad insists that we shouldn't observe christmas since we're not christian. It works for me and I get to spend time doing what I love most. Challenging myself with what nature provides to me, probably getting my butt kicked, and somehow coming out with some funny story to tell, like last year when i got caught in a super mini avalanche and it took 30 mins to dig my way out because i did something stupid, but anyway this year...

NO $ so no snowboarding until february

anyway, back to the story, my parents were buying a new house in oceanside. why i have no clue. my mother was reluctant about it and wanted my support so she can say no to my dad. i guess i didn't see the clues and i answered with a "you should do what makes you happy since it's about your retirement, if you think you'll be happy in oceanside then you should move and not worry about things like property value" which i'll still stand by.

so little did i know that the purchase went through already because this morning my dad's like, oh.. your mom doesn't like the place and maybe we shouldn't live there.

then all hell breaks loose because well, the escrow already went through and the purchase happened which now my dad's like to my mom "if you don't want to live there, then i'll fix up the place and sell it and get your money back"

Needless to say I made a quick exit stage left to clean up my place in fountain valley before they really start dropping bombs.

yup... this is why i'm normally no the mountains christmas day. i can challenge myself with nature, but i duck for cover when it's a family argument.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

And I feel I have to post this every year--

Steve Martin - Silver Bells

So funny, i love it haha :D

First, Happy Birthday to [info]ryan_and_z and technically belated birthday to [info]tokiyoh! It being Christmas Eve, Wikipedia says your birthdays fall on the day in 1955 that Col. Harry Shoup NORAD famously received an errant call from someone calling about the whereabouts of Santa, due to a misprinted number in a Sears ad. Since then, NORAD has been keeping a watch over the skies for a jolly fat man in red and his reindeer, flying around giving presents to the youth of the world. It's also the day in 1968 that the first humans orbited the moon in Apollo 8. It would be 7 months later before we'd then touch down on it. Hope you both had a great day.

Second, a little early, but:

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!

Hope you all get what you want under the Christmas tree. I'll gladly take stripperific Kallen under mine. Thank you, Google. >:3

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

An Ancient tale of a man who followed the true spirit of Christmas. Good Will towards all men on earth, and giving to those instead of receiving.

When i was in 10th grade, my english teacher would read us this timeless tale before the winter break and it reminded me of how important it is to remember the old tale of charity and its meaning that still exists today. It's not a big gift but hopefully it'll be a story you'll all share with others some day and continue the tradition!

Have a merry christmas and a happy, HAPPY, new year!

I'm sure the arguments have been tossed on cosplay.com and it's been going back and forth, but the question never got answered. Should cosplay photographers charge money for their time?

I think alot of people find the idea proposterous and you get alot of people who champion the idea that it's just a hobby. But lately i've been wondering, how different is it from let's say fantasy photography or any other form of modelling?

For one there's not really an industry that i know of that really gives cosplayers a means to support themselves through their hobbies. I mean sure there are booth babes and maybe costume designers, and in the rare case, commission stores. Perhaps it's too niche of a market for an industry to thrive, but should that dictate the value of a photographer?

I think the good thing about doing it as a hobby and not being paid for it is that there isn't a deadline. Thank god for that because barely touchd my PMX shots and to be honest it probably won't be until february until i touch them.

So in my boat, that's all dandy and i take it as a hobby. I think anybody who I shoot with is well aware that i'm not the most timely person when it comes to cosplay photography because I like my sleep and I have other interest too. It's not the first thing on my plate.

But there are some photographers who deliver fast and are able to balance their full time job and whatnot (still trying to figure that one out) and they can meet the demands. I mean I don't know if super no 1 gets paid by j-entertainment, but he's really diligent about getting them their stuff pronto (I hope he gets paid).

When looking at the professionalism of other photographers, I think they should charge someone depending on what they ask for. If I were to be more professional, money would drive me to work on those photos instead of deciding to watch a new episode of no reservations.

I was driving ashley, blanklogo's gf, to shiya's sewing party when we got into this discussion about if people should pay or not. And I think we agreed that depending on what's being asked for. I think moving forward, I'll be incorporating this practice being that this.

I'm going to draw the line on who's asking for service.

Am I asking a cosplayer for a photo session to build my skills
or is a cosplayer asking for my time?

I think the question is who's time is in demand.

Honestly if I don't think it would be an issue of an established cosplayer has a going rate. Maybe nt as much as a professional swimsuit photographr, but let's say it's someone i didn't kow like Zalora aka Jill. I think it wouldn't be an issue if she asked to be paid for a photoshoot since she doesn't know me and i'm probably not on the top teir of photographers that she wants to work with.

That being said, if i did end up paying said cosplayer for his/her time, I think that also gives me the right to hold onto the images.

Technically we've all been working on a TFP basis, but I think cosplay has run its course where someone like Jo Ellen can demand 300 bucks out of me, Mr. uber rookie photographer, to compensate for her day.

I think the same is true vice versa. I mean I'm fairly happy to shoot almost anybody, but someone like the great qcamera has limited time. Why should he spend time to shoot and edit a rookie cosplayer when he'd rather work with some super awesome cosplayer.

That and what is the cosplayer getting from the photographer. Some might say, oh it's digital so it's free, well then I might counter that argument with a, okay that's fine, i'll give you a 60k file for free then. 40k really is enough to show off your costume in your profile. There should little to no reason why anyone should get a high res photo for free and i'll stand by that statement.

Though it still is a hobby for many of us, I do believe that sooner or later the laws of supply and demand will enter the oosplay world and I honestly think it's justiied.

It might be just a hobby and that's fine if some people want to be a photo philanthropist, but I think that time is something that has value, even if it is a hobby.
